18th Sunday after Pentecost

Due to severe flooding in the fellowship hall services for this Sunday are cancelled. We hope to see you October 3, 2021. If you have time to volunteer, please contact the church office. We will provide the supplies for the cleaning.

Call to Worship (inspired by James 3, Mark 9:33-37, Bruce Prewer)

We come here today not because we are clever but because God welcomes the slow learners.
We come here not because we are wise, but because God loves us in spite of our folly.
We come knowing that the greatest persons will be found among those who humbly serve like Jesus did, and that the brightest ideas and the deepest truth will come
from those who see themselves as little children in Christ’s school. O Lord, open up our mind and our hearts and enable our lives to declare your praise.

Lord, Whose Love Humble Service #461

Blessing (litany by Jeremy W. Yoder)

We have waited patiently for God, and he has heard our cry. He has set our feet on solid ground, and kept us steady as we journey together.

God, you have put a new song into our mouths, a song of praise to you. May the world know that you have sent us by the song of your love in our lives.

From our Senior Minister…

This weekend’s flooding has been surprising. We pray that you are safe. If you need help with any repairs, please let us know if we can help. The flooding in the fellowship hall (second time this weekend) came with surprising speed. All was dry until 9:15 and a hard rain came that poured water in through the back door like a faucet. Several shop vacs were quickly put to use, but we could not keep up with the rising tide. Because of the time, the risk of slipping and inability to use electronic equipment, we had little choice but to cancel the service. Those who were there quickly jumped into action removing water, mopping, moving furniture and equipment. Thank you all for your hard work. Gratefully, we will be returning to the Sanctuary on for worship on Sunday, October 3 with a special service of dedication that morning. An initial and thorough cleaning of the pews will be professionally done, but we will need a second dusting and cleaning in the sanctuary and gathering space before we return on October 3. Currently we plan on work days for Thursday, September 30 and Friday, October 1. We want to stagger volunteer times because of Covid protocols.

If you have time to volunteer, please contact the church office. We will provide the supplies for the cleaning.

Grace and Peace,

Tom

Renovation Update:

Finishing touches before the pews, organ and piano are moved back into place. We will be ready to return to worship in the sanctuary on Sunday, October 3! That day will be a celebration and rededication. It is also World Communion Sunday when we share the Lord’s Supper with Christians around the world. Please consider giving to the Building Fund (over and above your regular tithe) to pay for these repairs. Please designate your gift to go toward the FCC Building Fund.

Tom Murdock - Senior Pastor

Tom was born in Pensacola Florida and has been living in Tennessee since 1990.

A graduate of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Tom came to the Disciples through several years of searching and prayer. Experiencing Communion on a weekly basis gave new meaning to worship, as a seminary professor had once commented about the first communion between Jesus and Disciples, “How could they ever smell or taste bread and wine and not remember Jesus?”

Tom has served Disciple of Christ congregations in Shelbyville, Union City, and now in Tullahoma where he has been the senior pastor since 2005. He and his wife Angie share their home with two cats.

Vicki Collinsworth - Music Director

Vicki has been a church musician since the age of sixteen.

For the past ten years she has served as the organist for First Christian. In 2014 she also began serving as the music director. Vicki currently devotes most of her time to composing and arranging for different venues she is involved with, including FCC Sanctuary Choir, FCC worship service, Tullahoma Civic Choir, and Motlow State College programs.

Her church music is published with Lorenz Publishing, Hope Publishing and Hal Leonard.
